Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy
Department of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy
Advancing Orthopedic Rehabilitation, Manual Therapy, Sports Injury Management, and Evidence-Based Musculoskeletal Care.
Overview & Academic Scope
The Department of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy is a premier clinical specialty dedicated to the
evaluation, diagnosis, conservative management, and post-surgical rehabilitation of bone, joint,
ligament, tendon, and muscle disorders. The department forms an integral core of both undergraduate
(B.P.Th) and postgraduate (M.P.Th in Musculoskeletal Sciences) curricula.
Through evidence-based clinical reasoning, students gain expertise in orthopedic clinical assessment, specialized manual therapy techniques, spinal mobilization, kinetic chain biomechanics, and sports- specific functional training. The department operates in close synergy with tertiary-care orthopedic, trauma, joint replacement, and rheumatology units to provide comprehensive patient-centered care.

Core Academic & Clinical Objectives
- Orthopedic & Trauma Rehabilitation: Comprehensive management of fractures, dislocations, soft tissue injuries, and degenerative disorders (Osteoarthritis, Spondylosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis).
- Pre- and Post-Surgical Rehabilitation: Protocol-driven rehabilitation for Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA), Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA), arthroscopic ligament reconstructions (ACL/PCL/Meniscal repair), rotator cuff repairs, and spine surgeries (Discectomy, Laminectomy, Spinal Fusion).
- Advanced Manual Therapy Concepts: Practical training in Maitland mobilization, Kaltenborn- Evjenth orthopedic manual therapy, Mulligan Concept (Mobilization with Movement - MWM), McKenzie Method (Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy - MDT), and myofascial release.
- Spine Care & Postural Correction: Assessment and non-surgical management of disc herniations, sciatica, cervical radiculopathy, spinal canal stenosis, scoliosis, and postural dysfunctions.
- Sports Injury Management & Return to Play: On-field injury triage, biomechanical assessment, functional sports rehabilitation, plyometrics, agility retraining, and objective return-to-sport testing.
- Specialized Taping & Ergonomics: Application of rigid biomechanical taping, kinesiology taping, and occupational ergonomic workstation assessments to prevent repetitive strain injuries (RSI).
Clinical Specialty Units & Infrastructure
The department operates fully equipped clinical OPDs, IPD wards, and advanced rehabilitation areas
compliant with statutory university norms:
Orthopedic Inpatient (IPD) & ICU Services
- Early bedside mobilization, chest physiotherapy for post-surgical orthopedic patients, transfer training, CPM (Continuous Passive Motion) therapy, and progressive weight-bearing ambulation protocols.
Outpatient (OPD) Musculoskeletal Clinics
- Specialized treatment cubicles for individualized manual therapy, spinal mobilization tables, therapeutic exercise stations, and posture evaluation zones.
Manual Therapy & Dry Needling Unit
- Dedicated facilities for specialized manual joint mobilization, neural dynamic mobilization, trigger point dry needling, and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM).
Sports & Functional Performance Zone
- Equipped for closed-kinetic-chain functional strengthening, proprioceptive perturbation platforms, agility ladders, plyometric jump boxes, and resistance training systems.
Orthotics, Prosthetics & Ergonomics Advisory
- Assessment, measurement, and prescription of orthotic devices, spinal braces (Taylor's brace, Milwaukee brace, Lumbo-sacral belts), splints, footwear modifications, and ergonomic lifestyle counseling.
Teaching Methodology & Research Focus
- Academic delivery combines interactive clinical case discussions, journal clubs, live orthopedic bedside rounds, manual therapy skill labs, and community screening camps. Postgraduate students actively engage in high-impact clinical research in spine biomechanics, arthroplasty outcomes, kinematic analysis, and innovative manual therapy protocols.
